Mèlisses is opening its doors for its first Mediterranean cooking and lifestyle workshop.
A full 4 day workshop from the 4th to the 8th of July focused on special cooking classes and incredible outings to discover more about this secluded and wonderful Greek paradise that it is Andros. Our host Allegra Pomilio will take excellent care of you and make sure you have a one of a kind experience. You will be delighted by incredible Greek food, having the chance to discover the beauty and authenticity of the island of Andros, in the tranquility and luxury of Mèlisses. During your stay, you will have the opportunity to cook, style, explore, take wonderful photos, relax, meet local producers, dine in typical tavernas and meet other people moved by the same passions for food and traveling.
This workshop is open to all levels, from food enthusiasts to professionals, hosting a small group of participants in order to allow everybody to learn and practice as much as possible. With our lovely Chef Despina Siahuli you will be learning to prepare homemade, authentic dishes, not usually prepared in the average restaurant; recipes that reflect the culinary heritage of Andros and Greece. Being a Mediterranean melting pot, Mèlisses would not be complete without a streak of Italian influence. Long, rustic wooden tables with wonderful table settings will set the perfect scene for our styling tips and special pasta making class taught by our Italian host. We’ll be visiting local producers, discovering little villages spread across the island, having private tours in monasteries and visiting hidden gems usually known to locals only.
Here’s some more practical information about the workshop:
Mèlisses, Andros, Greece.
July 4th-8th, 2018.
Despina Siahuli, our lovely chef, hails from Athens, Greece. She has always been fascinated by food, and especially by how food makes people feel and the memories it creates. Seven years ago, she quit a job in online media production and started cooking. Soon after, she was selling her food in London’s street food markets, and also cooking and organising cookery workshops at E5 Bakehouse. Despina has also worked as a chef at St. John Bar Restaurant in Smithfield, The Greek Larder in Kings Cross, Hand in Stratford and Today Bread in Walthamstow. We are incredibly lucky to have her!
Allegra Pomilio our culinary host has been working in the field for many years. Her photography and visual art background studies combined with her passion for food found perfect balance in her blog: www.allegrapomilio.com. She assisted and spent time in Mimi Thorisson’s kitchen, in the heart of the French countryside. She spent two years honing her skills, studying at the Alain Ducasse Academy, as well as attending many prestigious Italian chef’s classes. Greece is her second home and Mèlisses is her continuous source of inspiration, where she pays particular attention to the presentation of the dishes and to the “art de la table”.

At Mèlisses, everything is aimed to enhance the local flora and fauna; the house is located in the exclusive and secluded bay of Paleopoli. There, underwater, you can still see the old city, once the main harbor of the island. The bay is opposite the extraordinary scenery of the island of Iaros, which is still today considered legendary and protected for its marine wildlife.
The property is completely isolated with its private one hectare land on the sea. All around the house there is quietness and peace. The house has been realised by the best team of landscape designers and architects, completely respecting the surroundings by using local plants and rough stones, creating a continuous connection with the environment, almost disappearing from human sight. Mèlisses has many different fruit trees and typical herbs and spices. The location is surrounded by crystal waters, where wild figs and grapes grow uninhibited. Anytime is a good time to relax and have a nice swim in the fresh waters of the pool.
